The Education Department Gilgit Baltistan is the largest provider of educational services in the Gilgit Baltistan with direct responsibility for 1687 schools and 15 colleges. Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan is the second largest education provider with direct responsibility for 159 schools. AKES is mainly focusing girl's education with some enrolment of boys in coeducation classes.

Karakoram International University is the only public university, there are no medical or engineering colleges.
