Many of the greatest achievements of mankind in the field of science have rendered us so many benefits but have also created some problems.

The word science has been derived from the Latin word scientia which means knowledge. We cannot live without scientific knowledge in this modern world. Most of our tasks are done by the solutions provided to us only due to the development in science. But on the other hand the destructive inventions of science have also caused many harmful effects on our society.

One of the greatest developments of science is the invention of computer. With the computer, Internet came into being. Through the Internet, we can find answers to any query in our minds and remain in touch with anyone in any part of the world.

Inventions such as washing machine, refrigerator, geyser, microwave oven etc made our lives easier and more comfortable than ever before. Television, cinema and compact discs have given the entertainment industry a new recognition.

The technologies used in the factories provide us countless products which make our lives comfortable and enjoyable. One of the most important benefits of science is the advancement in the field of medicine. Thousands of lives have been saved and mortality rate has been reduced due to the development of modern methods of treatment. Cures and prevention of many diseases such as cholera, small pox and even polio have been discovered and efforts are being made to discover cures for incurable diseases such as AIDS and cancer.

Aeroplanes are the fastest and most comfortable means of travelling. Trains, cars and buses have made life mobile.Due to scientific advancement man has reached the moon. Other planets are also being explored by sending rockets and jets into the space. Wireless is indeed a wonderful means of communication.

But as the famous saying goes, every coin has two sides; similarly, there are also some negative effects of science. The worst impact of science was the advent of Nuclear Age which could also be called the Age of Fear. Long range bombs, missiles and worst of all the atom bomb are also the products of science. The effects of the atom bomb can still be seen in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. All these deadly weapons have increased terrorism in the world.

Nowadays most of the people spend their time watching television or chatting on the Internet which impairs their vision. Furthermore, it also makes them lazy due to lack of sports or any other physical activity.

The factories have increased pollution in the world. Smoke and other dangerous gases such as sulphur dioxide cause different respiratory problems. They, along with CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbon s), have caused the depletion of the ozone layer.

Nonetheless, we still cannot live without science and technology in this fast paced modern world. Given the benefits of science, we should at least try to reduce the negative aspects of science. It is not impossible for us to reduce at least some of the negative effects of science. We must try to use science only to make our lives better not worse. We must not build any more destructive weapons. We should try to alleviate poverty, hunger, and provide poor people with the basic necessities of life. We should try to spread peace in the world. We should aim to develop this world not destroy it. Only this attitude can make our planet a better place to live in.
